A.S.S.A - Phantom Hourglass Spectulation

April 16th, 2006 at 11:21 pm by Darth Citrus

Well it has been sometime since we’ve seen one of these on Zelda Blog. I must apologize to the masses that have eagerly hit the refresh button all month in anticipation.

Ah who am I kidding, but my apologies none the less.

A lot of stuff has happened since my last article. The Golden Item Awards, April Fools Day, and of course a new Zelda game for the DS. “Phantom Hourglass”, the first handheld 3D Zelda game, using duel screens and a stylus.

Now I’ve seen numerous websites discuss the implications of the touch screen, use of the stylus, the amazing new boomerang, ability to draw on your maps and so forth.

But what about the plot? Is no one going to take a stab at what the storyline is going to be? What about the drama? How the game will play out? Surely someone is foolish enough to piece together potential story elements.

And that’s where I come in.

With that, I welcome you to another fantastic edition of A Somewhat Serious Article. Plot? Story? Adventure? We have it all here in a very special PHANTOM HOURGLASS SPECTULATION.

The beauty of plot speculation at this point is that no one can prove you wrong. Ideas may seem strange, weird and totally unlikely, but no one can bluntly state “Nintendo is not going to do that” simply because we don’t know.

As with my articles that have come true, (The Ultimate Zelda Movie - Actual Movie site and The Twilight Princess DelayNews Article) don’t be surprised if this actually appears in the game. After all, Nintendo has been known to pull some crazy stuff.

Oh and for those of you who haven’t seen the trailer, you can check that out here.

On to the speculation:

REGARDING TIME TRAVEL
The first thing I’m going to talk about is the title. “Phantom Hourglass” has 16 letters, 5 syllables, and 2 capital letters. The first thought that springs to mind when the word “Hourglass” is uttered is “Time Travel”

The idea of time travel is a status quo with Nintendo. Thanks to its ability to make any game “Amazing”, you can find some idea of time travel in every Nintendo game since 1997.

Phantom Hourglass is no different. I fully expect this game to have some element of time travel. For example:

Link is forced to relive the same 7 years over and over again in order to stop a possessed queen from destroying the world top of a Black Tower. To do so would require help from both the past and the future in order to prevent the moon from crashing down, obliterating all life on the planet.

Let’s face it. If I had developed that many time traveling games, I would simply roll all the previous ideas together for this one. If you haven’t played Oracle of Ages there is actually a possessed queen, and there is a Black Tower.

She just doesn’t try to bring the moon down. That’s all.

PH Link teams up with his other time traveling counterparts to fight crime in the future.

Just go with me on this. Halfway through the game, Link finds the “PHANTOM HOURGLASS” which allows him to control the flows of time. In doing so, he inadvertently sends the OOT Link, the OOA Link and himself to the 34th century…

Where they totally become ELITE TACTICAL HERO FORCE DELTA!!!!!

Fighting Crime, Old School

I know none of that is in the trailer, but I think this would be a fairly educated guess.

During his adventure, Link discovers the real enemy is himself 20 years in the future and he must use the teachings of the Phantom Hourglass to defeat himself and truly bring peace to the world.

It’s just like that movie Matrix Revolutions, where Neo reaches the final battle only to be confronted with himself. In the epic battle that follows, Neo realizes by destroying himself he will truly destroy his future counterpart and free the humans forever.

Yes I know that didn’t happen in Matrix Revolutions. But surely you’ll concede my idea is BETTER.

Seriously though wouldn’t that be an amazing game to play? Fighting your way through countless dungeons and puzzles. Seeing the rampant destruction and grief brought on by this villain. Vowing to strike him down at any cost, only to find it’s your FUTURE SELF!

How would you even react? I know I would completely flip out. Just imagine the epic duel that would follow. Exchanging the same one liners, exact style of swordplay, knowing each others strengths and weaknesses.

Man this idea is so amazing; I have to submit it to Nintendo, if its not already the storyline for Phantom Hourglass that is.

REGARDING THE GREAT SEA
I know many of you may not remember, but back in the day, there was a Zelda game called “The Wind Waker” Now in this “Wind Waker” Link had to sail around in his boat on what we called back then “The Great Sea”. Now it appears that this “Great Sea” is once again the location for the game. However, there’s one little difference.

When did Link get a fully armed steam powered destroyer? Back in the day, we had to rely on something called “wind” to get around. Now with the power of steam, sails and paddles are obsolete.

But since it’s already in the game let’s roll with it.

With his fully armored battleship, Link declares war on the entire sea. He wins.

Link is cruising around the Great Sea in his own BATTLESHIP. Does anyone else have anything that amazing? The Pirate Ship maybe, but Link could sink that thing in 5 hits. His boat has mounted cannon, powered by steam and everything.

With such an advanced piece of technology, what does Link do with it?

He kills the one line of defense the sea has. Octocroks.

Like I said, there isn’t much resistance at all. He could probably control the Great Sea within a week.

Nearing bankruptcy, Link is forced to a life of piracy, where he is feared both near and far as the dreaded “Pirate of the Great Sea, ARRRRRRR”

As fans of the series, we know that adventuring costs a lot of money. It costs rupees to buy potions, bombs and arrows. Or when worse comes to worse, hundreds of rupees simply to obtain a translation of a map.

While we can find rupees in the bushes, or off the dead bodies of our enemies, this form of income is very unstable. Eventually, Ganon will catch on and stop giving his minions a salary. What’s a hero to do then?

Simple. Take his superior battleship and become a pirate. Just like Robin Hood. He can take the money from the rich, and in return their land doesn’t get destroyed.

Or he could go fundraising, but I think piracy would make for a more interesting game.

REGARDING FAIRES
This one took me a while to get, simply because I don’t pay attention to small details. But eventually I realized that Link has fairy following him around.

Quick research on the internet discovered that most fans believed the fairy to be Navi, explaining their reasons and then ending with some statement of anger. As the creator of “Navi Censoring”, “Stop Annoying Characters Day” and numerous other things, I couldn’t pass this up.

The Phantom Hourglass allows Link to seek advice from past/future people. Link inadvertently brings Navi to his time where she proceeds to give him useless advice.

In addition to “Hey”, “Look”, “Listen”, “Open the Door”, “Let me tell you how to breathe” etc etc. I think the following quotes would be heard as well:

“Fire the Cannon to kill the enemy”
“The bombmaster said North. Let’s head North”
“The arrowmaster said East. Let’s head East”
“The swordmaster said South. Let’s head South”
“The cannonmaster said West. Let’s head West”
“Did you use the hourglass yet?”
“Did you use the hourglass yet?”
“Did you use the hourglass yet?”
“Did you use the hourglass yet?”
“Did you use the hourglass yet?”
“Did you use the hourglass yet?”

Repeat for 27 hours.

Unwittingly, Link opens up a gateway to a parallel dimension where he inadvertently releases Navi from her prison. Under the guise of helping Link, Navi secretly plans her to continue her quest for world domination.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, wait until Nintendo makes a game with this storyline; then come back and continue reading. For those of you who do know what I’m talking about carry on.

Anyway, Navi continues her plan to use the seven stones of power to take over the world. By tricking Link into obtaining the stones, she bypasses all the traps that were meant for her. When the last stone is obtained, Navi abandons Link and returns to her “Dark Fortress of Power”. Link is then forced to stop Navi from becoming “Xh’Budi, The Queen Evil of the Universe with Infinite Hands.”

Again, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, play the game once Nintendo makes it.

I know that these ideas might a little strange, but my ASSA’s have been known to speak the truth now and then. I frankly wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo releases information tomorrow that happens to fit in with the whole “Link is a Pirate” scheme. It’s happened before.

But remember, at this point, we can’t prove anything wrong. While my ideas may be extremely unlikely at the most, there isn’t enough information to rule out anything. They may seem odd, stupid or a little strange, but again this is, A Somewhat Serious Article.

I bet it’ll have voice acting too. I mean, it’s the only way that you could possibly make that game idea worse better!

=0 I made the second comment! How cool! XD I really couldn’t follow that. Speak more fluently. =D

The battle ship is a bit weird, to go along with the pirate idea, Link probably stole it from the boat salesman, to go save another family member, because his sister got boring.

Okay, so Link decides to go on a boat, and it speeds away into a whole new world, and Link doesn’t know what hit him.

You totally made me think of Steamboy.

The Phantom Hourglass is something at the end of the game that Link gets so he can go back in time to when ALttP didn’t happen and make sure it does happen and prevent TWW from ever happening.

I’m right about this, be quiet.

“Or he could go fundraising, but I think piracy would make for a more interesting game.”

Hhahaaha!!! That was another jem!!! You are truly a (jedi) master at this!! :D

Before DC corrects you on this, shadowknight, he’s a Sith master! hah

Anyway, I thought your ideas were brilliant! And I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of them was true! Pst I liked Queen Ambi. And she was in love with a pirate! =O

    Quality stuff Darth. Quality.

I wouldint be suprised if half of that stuff comes true :) .its about time that link learns the consequences of constant time travel.I mean,if he goes back and forth exactly 7 years in oot, wouldint he eventually go past the time he existed in because of his previous warp and create a slightly younger copy? think of how many links there would be after trying to do a side quest or something :) .I dont get the stupid boat though,it just doesent fit in……..even IF it talks.

LMAO! Another awesome A.S.S.A. Darth! The whole Navi think…so true…XD

Alright, soon I’ll have the fan fic, but thats not on subject right now.I did think Navi could become the Queen of Fairies once, and you brought up Zelda’s Axiom in your article, plus, there’s too many pirates in the Zelda series. Two Thumbs up for you DC.The seven statues could make up a body (1 Headstone, 2 Armstones, 2 Legstones, 1 Torsostone, 1 pair Wingstones) then Navi becomes the queen and tries to destroy Hyrule with the moon. And the only way Link, Link, and Link can stop her is with “The Bottle of Time.”

More like The Beer Bottle of Time.

HAH!Good one TML, good one.And after Navi is captured, the tower explodes, and when the three Links wake up in the ocean, there’s a giant Tingle dancing where the island was, so they take the battleship and blow him up.

And then eat Tingle’s carcass to make sure he doesn’t rise from the dead.

    Hah! Great stuff.

But about the evil future Link…wouldn’t young Link inevitably become evil, considering that the evil Link is none other than his future self? He’d have to do some serious fate-altering in order to save the world this time.

That could actually make a very interesting story, no joke. However, aspects of it have already been used in the Prince of Persia trilogy, if any of you have played it. Particularly the second installment.

“Your journey will not end well. You cannot change your fate….no man can.”
-The Old Man, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within.

I’ve never actually played POP. :P

But I did consider writing a bit more about that. Where after Link kills his future self, he becomes the evil Link and is sent back in time to try and take over Hyrule. Repeat over and over.

Then I remembered I had a FINAL in 48 hours, so I decided against it. :P

Hey Darth, did you like my new Metafic? Later I’ll put up part two, and you’ll probably like it.And I liked the idea for Link becoming Tingle, and the Links kill Tingle, but your idea is good too.

Aww man, this reminds me just how much I’ve missed these articles!

I think you’re right on target with the time travelying dealy, but…

Most accurate prediction: the Navi quotes!

Navi: Did you use the hourglass yet?
    Link: No.
Navi: Did you use the hourglass yet?!
    Link: No!
    Navi: Didyouusethehourglassyet?!

    *two days later*
Navi: So…did you use it yet?
    Link: SHUT THE *NAVI* UP!
Navi: Did you just censor yourself with my name?
    Sounds good to me!

Hey that was good ^_0, That was very good. This is what I love about the ASSAs, the place is filled to the brim with shared comedy, but one day I’ll be as good as you guys, so until then *tickles everyone with a feather*

The BATTLESHIP isn’t that advanced. TWW might have only had a sailing ship but that doesn’t make the battleship high-tech, look at the great bay temple in MM that was a super high-tech ship/submarine which is far more advanced than the BATTLESHIP and is in MM which is only in the same age as OOT which was at least 400 years before TWW.

Its advanced for them, what if the water necessary for the steam is pumped from the sea itself, then used as steam for the boat.Termina is an advanced place, but the three buildings with such technology have one thing in common…water. What makes the Clock work…water, what makes the music in the Music House of Ikana Canyon work…water, and what makes the pipe pump water throughout the place, releaseing is at several places, water.Termina depends upon water, and without it, nothing of importance works. As for Goht, electricity.

as long as i don’t find out that anouma came up with this game’s premise while watching “steamboat willie,” then i think it will still be a good game. i am a big fan of both the “top-view” zelda games (formerly known as 2D zelda games) and the nintendo DS, so i am very excited to say the least. (not that i dont like the 3D zelda games, i just think of the top-view ones as a completely different series altogether, know what i mean?)

I said it was Navi. I like your idea of time travel but Navi being evil?!? thats just strange. And the moon, Stranger. I think that it takes place after TWW and links looking for New Hyrule.

Thats a real good possibility.I believe Navi was evil since she got to my last nerve with her, “HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY-” *blows up like an atomic bomb*

Or not the actual Navi blowing up, more like Navi CLONES! It’d be like kamikaze redone!

*Soldier on ship looks up at sky*
Navi Clone: Hey! Look! Listen! Listen! Look out! Did you use the hourglass yet? Let me tell you how to breathe!
    Soldier: Oh *Na…
*Navi clone rams and explodes into ship*
*More Navi clones fly in from distance*
Navi Clones: *chirping* Hey! Hey! Look out! Open the door! The bombster said North. Let’s head North! The arrowmaster said East! Let’s head East! The swordmaster said South! Let’s head South! The canonmaster said West! Let’s head West!
*Another soldier attempts to contact general via King of Red Lions as Navi clones kamikaze into ships*
Soldier: Deliver this message exactly as it sounds! “Sir, numerous Navis are flying in at one o’clock at a velocity of 65 miles per hour! If we don’t act fast, their self-destruct methods and annoying comments will…”
    *Loses signal when KORL sinks*
    Soldier: Sir! Sir!
    *looks over shoulder*
Navi: Have you ever played the Nocturne of Shadow that Sheik gave you?
    Soldier: Aaaah!
    *Explosion*
*Back at real Navi’s Dark Fortress of Power*
Navi: I wonder if Green Potion is fattening.

Special thanks to Darth Citrus for the multiple Navi quotes!

[TML: Stay on topic, HH. You don’t want on my bad side.]

    Lmao

You know while I was playing Majoras Mask and ran into all the characters who resembled people from Hyrule In Ocarina of Time I half expected to run into Link’s evil twin (the beard is optional) or a friendly (possibly retarded) red kneck version of Old Ganon/dorf working in the barn at Cremia Ranch…hmmm I wonder what the Hyilian version of Tingle is like or can he pass between dimensions like the Happy Mask man… wait I get it Tingle is like Doctor Who, his red undies are not there for decoration but it is a primitive Time/Space travel garment which would explain his appearence in Wind Waker & Minish Cap.

Doctor Who?I still think that Tingle was brought back via PH.And what do you mean by

Link’s evil twin (the beard is optional) or a friendly (possibly retarded) red kneck version of Old Ganon/dorf working in the barn at Cremia Ranch

Just out of curiostity (and its Romani Ranch, not Cremia, but you were close)

Well the stereotype for a lot of cheesy Sci-Fi Movies is that the evil twin that is either from an alternate reality or is created in some kind of Cloneing experiment always has a beard, I dont know why thats just what they do in a lot of cheesy Sci-Fi Movies, lol.

Maybe Vaati could be the main villian in PHG. I know it doesn’t fit in with the timeline, but if this game is the sequel of TWW, maybe just, maybe he would. I thought if there would be a sequel to TWW Vaati would be the main baddie because he is a “Wind mage”, and TWW had the wind waker which could control the winds. (Course now it’s an hourglass…) Also Vaati, so far, has been the main villian in the games of late. I hope Vaati will be in 3d!

wow, was that huge link supposed to be on purpose?

I was just thinking that earlier today, only I thought Vaati would be in TP.You mabye right, since there are a return of wind-based enemies (the flying variety) but hten again, I read once in Wikipedia that Vaati is more like an Earth mage, rather than a wind mage, consideing that only his power of flight is wind based…forgive me, anyways, there’s always possibilities, keep up with guessing people, maybe one or more of us will guess right.

While I still have a HUGE fondness for Old Ganon/dorf and a mild likeing for Vati I want to see a truely new super evil bad guy to rival or even surpass Ganondorf in terms of evilness and power make an appearence… or Majoras Mask could come back for a re-match.

I know this is off topic so please forgive me Lord TML, lol.

Anyway news just in and in an official interview with Shigeru Miyamoto in the “Official Nintendo Magazine” he has stated that you will be able to “Point” at enemies using the Revolution Wand-Stick thingy so I guess we can take this to mean that we “Might” be able to fight by swinging the Nun-Chuk controller.

*swings the controller around until it hits HH in the face* Ouch ;_; Never try kung-fu again, I’ll just stick to a much safer thing, swords and shields. They make it sound like some arcade games where you hold the controller (shaped like a gun) then push the button to kill the alien zombies or the geese. It’d be cool if they had a Zelda arcade.
